Phonemic Awareness

What is it?

The ability to identify, access and differentiate sounds in words. In Foundations, the focus is on first sounds.

Why is it Important?

Phonemic awareness is a strong predictor of reading success, and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness fast-tracks the learn-to-read process. This means that children who demonstrate strong phonemic awareness go on to become better readers, sooner.

Oral Communication

(Speaking And Listening Skills)

What is it?

The ability to comprehend (listen) and apply (speak) a wide variety of words and sentence structures to facilitate meaningful communication.

Why is it Important?

Students who begin school with a relatively large vocabulary tend to learn more words, more quickly than students who begin school with a poor vocabulary. That is, knowing more words makes it easier to learn new words. Therefore, vocabulary development accelerates your child’s comprehension and communication skills.
